What is an Apostille?

An Apostille, or Apostille of the Hague, is a seal used in the legalization of documents. Established in the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, its purpose is to facilitate and simplify the process of authentication of documents between the signatory states of the Convention. The Apostille is not a document by itself but a seal that gives legitimacy to the written content it covers.

Which documents require an Apostille?

Any document issued in one country that is to produce legal effects in another requires an Apostille. The seal authenticates the content of the document and allows its recognition by other Hague Convention signatory countries.

Is it necessary to translate the Apostille?

Although legally, according to the provisions of the Hague Convention, the translation of the Apostille is unnecessary, in practice many agencies and officials are not familiar with the instrument, so it is advisable to have it translated to avoid inconveniences.
